Diabetes and You
If you have recently been diagnosed with Diabetes
or even just suspect you may have Diabetes all you
will want to do is find out as much information as
possible to help you deal with the news.
Here at Your Diabetes we aim to give you all the
facts you need to manage your diabetes.
First of all, what is Diabetes?
Glucose comes from the digestion of foods such as
bread, rice, potatoes, sweets and other sweet foods.
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. This
hormone helps the glucose enter the body's cells
where it is used as fuel by the body.
People with Diabetes Mellitus cannot properly use
the blood glucose in their bodies leaving the amount
of sugar in the blood too high for the body to deal
with.
There are two main types of diabetes;
Type 1
Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is the least common type and
usually appears before the age of 40. People with
type 1 diabetes are unable to produce any insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes is more common and usually occurs
in people over 40 years old and is linked with being
overweight.
People with type 2 diabetes can make
some insulin but not as much as the body needs or
they can produce insulin but it does not work
properly, this is known as insulin resistant
diabetes.
There are millions of people with diabetes in the
world and there are lots, lots more who have the
condition and don’t know it.
The signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes will be
obvious and develop very quickly but with type 2
diabetes the signs and symptoms will be less obvious
or even non-existent.
If you think you have any of
the following symptoms ask your GP for a diabetes
test:
Once diagnosed and
treatment begins the symptoms are quickly relieved.
Early treatment will also reduce the chances of
developing serious health problems later in life.
